King Charles VII of France asked the Pope to review the Condemnation
trial of Joan of Arc,
which the church agreed to in the 1450’s. It was found that there were
numerous irregularities
in Joan’s original trail conducted by Bishop Cauchon and other French
ecclesiastics. They
were under the strong influence of the English, who hated and feared
Joan because she had
defeated them soundly in battle at Orleans and Patay. So they tried to
get the church to
convict Joan of heresy.
In her original trial, Joan was not even given an advocate. She was
finally condemned for wearing men’s clothing, which may have been a sin,
but certainly was not heresy.
As a result of the Nullification Trial, the church in 1456 declared the
verdict of Joan of Arc’s
Condemnation Trial null and void. This led eventually, after a long
time, to her canonization
in 1919.
